If you ever get a chance I would wholeheartedly suggest that you watch Empire. Now with that, it is generic but I still believe that this song can be appreciated and loved by many. It doesn’t take much for people to write love songs or break-up songs nowadays, and after a while, I do get tired of hearing people sing about the same thing, no matter how beautiful the voice. Well truthfully, while it is relatable, the lyrics to me are a bit generic. You’re probably wondering why I would give it such a neutral rating after raving over the relatability of the content. Out of five stars, I would have to give it a 3.5/5. But I believe that with that prior experience you are able to fully appreciate the meaning behind the lyrics, whether true or made simply to sell records, the pain that this woman sings about, is relatable and appreciated. Sure, sometimes when you listen to sad music, it gives you those sad feels that you don’t particularly want to remember.

I think what I like so much about this song, is that we all have had that ONE heartbreak (or multiple, no judging) that does truly affect you. Also being so repetitive, the lyrics are easy to remember. While the song is a bit repetitive, the slow and soulful beat that it gives off a really groovy and catchy rhythm. I have a habit of putting songs on repeat until I go blue in the face, and this is the same case with “What is Love”.
